A Note
from the Author
Welcome to The River Series.
The design of these novels relies heavily on the art of written dialogue. In modern times, the telling of stories, the sharing of life experiences, the simple art of verbal communication is often replaced by computers, handheld electronic devices, distractions of television, and the general bedlam of noise in our fast-paced world.
In contrast, The River Series novels rely on interpersonal dialogue for expression of feelings, emotions, thoughts, hopes, and expectations. The benefit of this type of dialogue is that the reader becomes an intimate part of the characters’ experiences. The drawback of this style of writing is the risk of the reader being drawn so far into the characters’ lives that it feels very real. Reader be warned. You may laugh, you may cry. Some scenes may be difficult to read.
I personally wept through the last half of book three, Fishing Creek, even while writing it.
But then again, I wept through half of Tributary as well so, there you have it.

THE
RIVER SERIES
Hiatt’s debut work, The River Series, is comprised of ten medical historical romance novels which follow a group of exceptional Nurses and Doctors over a 40 year period, starting in WWI. The journey plunges into the struggle for faith and meaning in the throes of the battle between good and evil.
I: The Meuse
1916.
Amidst the harrowing chaos of World War I, a dedicated team of American volunteer nurses, led by Lydia Blackwell, find themselves stationed at a French casualty clearing station, near the front lines.
Supporting a remarkable team of surgeons and serving countless wounded, they navigate the relentless trials of war. Drawing strength from their unwavering convictions of faith and duty, and the steadfast support they offer one another, their journey explores the enduring forces of healing, love, and faith, even in unimaginably dark times.
II: THREE RIVERS
1917.
The Allies continue to press eastward against Axis forces. Nurse Lydia Blackwell-Finney, Doctor Simon Finney, Doctor Marcus Lovell, and their faithful dog Abril make their way back to America, having honorably fulfilled their military service.
Returning to the States, they plan to build their lives in Pittsburgh, where the three spiritual rivers of “faith, love, and charity” will converge. But Marcus must first travel to Rochester, hoping to reconcile with the woman he failed in France, the mother of the daughter he’s never met.
As Lydia and Simon start their life together and prepare for the birth of their first baby, Lydia navigates the challenges of a medical system, not yet ready for her battlefield-honed skills.
Simon, still healing from his illness in France, must also learn how to protect his wife and family from unimaginable dangers, on unexpected new fronts.
Knowing the cost, they answer the call to serve those most in need. With rising labor unrest, a dark evil taking root within the family, and the invisible menace of the Spanish flu… not to mention the uninvited ghosts of war which followed them home… it will take their unbreakable bonds of friendship and every ounce of their faith to face the battles ahead of them.

Testimonials
“The use of dialogue pulls you deeply into the characters’ experiences. I also enjoyed that intimacy is portrayed in sensual rather than sexual terms, allowing for the kind of marital relationships that many women dream of having… even if they have not yet found it”
— Marilyn D.
“It’s rare to find storytelling that takes the reader on a journey through laughter and tears, so effortlessly. Hiatt’s novels are time capsules, wrapped in romance and adventure, with a poignant message for modern society.”
